For some of these great men, love is a ‘delicious poison’ (William Congreve); for others, love can scorch like the heat of the sun (Henry VIII), or penetrate the depths of one’s heart like a cooling rain (Flaubert). Van Gogh was buried on July 30 in the municipal cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise at a funeral attended by his brother, Theo van Gogh, who died six months later, on January 25, 1891.

His first novel The Beautiful and Damned was flawed but set up Fitzgerald's major themes of the fleeting nature of youthfulness and innocence, unattainable love, and middle-class aspiration for wealth and respectability, derived from his own courtship of Zelda. Few of these letters engaged me as a reader, but I could see value in reading these expressions from the past, between lovers, married persons, and admirers. I mostly enjoyed the small biographies about each 'great man' chosen, as it gave a rare insight into the men behind their professions and accomplishments. I have met with women whom I really think would like to be married to a Poem and to be given away by a Novel. He contributed to the Frankfurter Gelehrte Anzeigen from 1772 to 1773, and in 1774 he published his first novel, self-revelatory Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers. Also most of the letters were preludes or committed during adultery as most men and the women they corresponded with were married to other people or at least with other people and lot of them didn't even end up together. From the private papers of Mark Twain and Mozart to those of Robert Browning and Nelson, Love Letters of Great Men collects together some of the most romantic letters in history. These letters bridge the gap between eras, reminding us that emotions are a constant thread throughout history.

Paganini's virtuosity inspired him to accomplish unheard of feats in piano technique and expression. But the time will come when you will sigh for any heart that could be fond and despair of one that can be faithful. Your sonnet is quite lovely, and it is a marvel that those red rose-leaf lips of yours should be made no less for the madness of music and song than for the madness of kissing. The touching letters each man wrote to their beloved cast light on every shade of love in the universe. Self-centred, egoistic, flowery, and impossibly cloying, they would be interpreted as hyperbolas or perhaps childlike attempts at humour.I'd recommend this book to all who like a bit of romance, want to learn a bit of 'behind-the-scenes' about history, and those who loved the scene from the Sex And The City movie of Carrie reading a piece of the poems contained in this book to Big.
