About this deal

The Field household is ruled by Jim Field - a philandering, heavy-drinking used car salesman - who is keen on the militaristic discipline of his children, and on keeping up appearances for the neighbors.

So it's not that there's really anything objectively wrong with a book that does the things this book does. I think I had made lots of assumptions about her from The Girl With The Pearl Earring cover to be honest. Told through a variety of shifting perspectives-wives and husbands, friends and lovers, masters and their servants, and a gravedigger's son-Falling Angels is graced with the luminous imagery that distinguished Girl With a Pearl Earring, Falling Angels is another dazzling tour de force from this master of voices (The New York Times Book Review). The story revolves around 3 sisters, Norma, Lou, and Sandy, who grow up in a majorly dysfunctional family. What interested me most is the transitional period between the Victorian era, with its strict social codes and elaborate commemoration of the dead, and the modern world where religion has lost its value and death is no longer celebrated. This text is the story of rootlessnes, of a London-Irish boy who has two identities and feels at home with neither. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. It's been a long time since I read something as depressing as this, and still, the ending gave me a sort of feeling of "everything will turn out just fine". It opens with the death of Walsh’s mother, ‘the Widow of Oranmore’, as he learns the Irish Way of Death: ‘the rosaries and mass cards and lilies and amaryllises, the curious mixture of innocence and guile with which distant in-laws from Kerry and Dublin would coo and sigh and claim close friendship and act at being saints, the increasingly direct conversations that the neighbours (and I) had with Mother about death and what she could expect in Heaven.

Actually, I knew from the start some of what happens beyond the ending —originally the book was meant to go through 1918.Perhaps it’s the book covers, which seem so run-of-the-mill; oh dear, maybe I am guilty of having judged a book by its cover. Sometimes I wrote a story in a couple evenings; other times it took me a whole year to complete one. When I find it, I’m hooked and obsessed, and I feel like I’m twelve years old again, reading late into the night with a flashlight under the covers. Written in the form of a field guide to help travelers traversing the landscape pocked with these entities, A Field Guide is a phenomenal read and lends insights into the myths and religious entities of various cultures.
